Arguing with the Cat...

medium_shelley_glasses_2.4.jpg

Dear Susan,

I must admit that I expected to wake up to snow this morning but instead it's raining. It's a good cold-to-the-bone February rain and I'd have rather stayed in bed under warm blankets today. Erik and I are up at 5:15 on weekdays so that he can catch the train into the city just past 6 am. We both have our morning routines and as long as uninterupted we do quite well. Scooter too, has his routines and for the most part he follows them to the letter. This morning however, he decided to throw the gum into the works. As I was making coffee (a long day...a few extra beans in the grinder) he was in the mood for a treat. He meowed. No response from me. He MeOwED! I scowled. He MEOOOOWED!! "Wait!!" I said with the obvious strain in my voice. His comic timing being what it is, he yawned the heartiest yawn I've ever seen. His mouth opened so wide that I thought the jaw might unhinge. His eyes got as big as butter plates and his ears turned completely back. When he was done, he meowed once more. I could resist no longer and gave him a "cookie". It was then that I realized I'd been arguing with a cat and what a silly way to start a day.

I suppose when all is said and done, we all "argue with the cat" now and then. I wonder how much we miss when we do that.

With cats in mind, how is Emma?? Is she continuing to toast herself by the fire these days??

What are your plans for the day?? I may meet with a friend this afternoon if we can coordinate that. If not, I plan to make some Cranberry Scones. It's a good day to have the oven on with warm, homey scents filling the rooms.

Love, Shelley

Shelley

I am glad to see that I am not the only one that argues with the cat. Like you don't have anything better to do. But there you stand talk/arguing with the cat. In the end the cat gets the better of you and the better wnd of the deal.

Dear Shelley,

We're getting the snow you didn't have!....More about that later.

Shelley, I'm sure that a cat's nature must be universal, because you were describing my Emma to a "T" when you talked about Scooter!

Every morning without fail, as soon as I'm up, Emma is right there in front of me, confronting me, and crying pathetically to be fed. You can't get the coffee on, you can't make toast...Not until you've given her her Iams, crunchy food, or her Temptations treats. The volume increases if she's ignored and the cries get bigger and wider and more pathetic until you can see past her tonsils and beyond to her tail!

Jenny our dog, on the other hand is a sedate and elderly lady and sooo polite. She's heavily addicted to chicken jerky treats and while Emma is in the midst of her dramatic morning performance, Jenny is sitting a few feet away looking at you very sadly and apologetically, eyeing up the cabinet where her treats are stored, but she just sits there and gives a whispering "huuurrmmphh", not a bark, more of an utterance, to tell you that please, when Emma, the boss has had her treats would it be okay for her to have hers?.....

We go through this every morning, so never feel you're alone Shelley!

Emma has barely moved from in front of the woodstove all day. I have to move her several times to prevent her from becoming tomorrow's supper!

Also, this morning, straight from out of the shower I stepped on a very wet and cold hairball. A great way to start the day!!

Glad you had a great day with your friend,
Love, Susan
